The differentiation between Jaguar and its sister company Land Rover used to be fairly clear: Jaguar makes cars, and Land Rover makes SUVs. But that line is about to get a little blurred. Apparently no longer content to let Land Rover have all the high-riding fun, Jaguar is preparing to launch a crossover over its own, based on a new lightweight aluminum platform and previewed by the C-X17 concept (pictured below) that was unveiled just last month in Frankfurt. But the latest reports suggest that Land Rover could, in turn, spin its own crossover off the new Jaguar architecture.

Major New Technologies Enhance 2014 Range Rover Evoque
20 August 2013
- New, responsive 9-speed automatic transmission now available
- World's first 'on-demand' Active Driveline delivers even greater agility
- Seven new driver assistance and convenience features added
- New Land Rover InControlTM connect car features
- Improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, depending on model
- Exterior and interior design enhancements, plus new alloy wheel designs
One of the most successful Land Rover vehicles ever made, the Range Rover Evoque, makes a further significant leap forward with the introduction of a host of new technologies. These enhancements lower fuel consumption by up to 11.4 percent and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 9.5 percent - depending on model - and bring a range of new comfort, convenience and connectivity features.
With global sales of more than 170,000 vehicles in just 18 months, the Range Rover Evoque has proven to be hugely successful and the 2014 model is destined to have even greater appeal. Customers ordering vehicles from the 2014 range, on sale from [insert date] depending on individual markets, will benefit from newly-available features, including: a new 9-speed automatic transmission, new driveline technologies, seven new driver assistance features and detail design enhancements inside and out.
"We are thrilled to be moving the Evoque on to the next stage and believe the exciting new driveline technology, driver safety and convenience features plus the Land Rover InControlTM connectivity capability (using advanced mobile technology to keep owners connected with their vehicle, their world and Land Rover services), make the 2014 Evoque an unbeatable choice for customers seeking the ultimate in compact SUV vehicles," said Land Rover Global Brand Director, John Edwards.
First shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the ZF-9HP automatic transmission is among the world's first 9-speed units fitted to a passenger car. It has an ultra-fast response time, described by ZF as "below the threshold of perception" and an... [Read More]
Whatcar? has someone close to the company that told them, "The Evoque Convertible now has the green light, it's going to be built." The concept car that we say at the Geneva Auto Salon in 2012 will be going into production in 2014. As it is understood, the car will retain all of the same options in the drive train as the fixed roof Evoque. Petrol and Diesel variants will be available, as well as 2 or 4 wheel drive. The top will apparently be a fabric based roof as opposed to a metal folding roof that has been prevalent in the BMW and Mercedes lines.
When the cabriolet was announced at the show, engineers stated that the frame would need no further modification with the absence of the roof. This means no more weight will have to be added to the chassis as in traditional convertible variant cars.
I am left to beg the question, "Just because you can remove the roof, should you?" I am all for a topless Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or a Blazer, but I think the mark is being missed a little here. According to Whatcar?, they are trying to position themselves in the market to compete with BMW 3 (and now 4) Series, and Audi TT(????) convertibles. The Evoque is not a sedan. It is a crossover SUV. I understand that the line there may be a blurry one, but the platforms are not the same. Target markets may be similar, but the car has different appeal. Buyers for the 3/4 Series and TT (More appropriately the A4 I think) convertible are not looking at a small SUV at all. They want a small, zippy little car. This is not what I think of when I think of Evoque. I think, and I may be crucified for this, that the Evoque surely drives like the new A4, but it is too large to be considered it's competition.
Kahn Design is no stranger when it comes to modifying Land Rovers and the semi-new Evoque has been a popular choice for the UK-based tuner. Now Kahn is back with one of its latest projects, the Evoque RS250 Orkney Grey. This particular Evoque, if anyone recalls, first appeared at Geneva last March, but was painted in plain white. Like the original, no changes were made under the hood of this updated version, as the Kahn crew focused their time on modifying the luxury SUVs interior and exterior aesthetics.

Production of Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) top-selling Halewood Range Rover Evoque could grind to a halt if staff vote for strike action in a pay dispute. About 900 workers with logistics group DHL are currently voting on strike action or industrial action short of a strike. They provide ‘just-in-time’ delivery of components to the plant’s production line for the Evoque and Land Rover Freelander 2.
