    The Range Rover Evoque Featuring MagneRide Damping Control Technology


    The Range Rover Evoque will feature the BWI Group's third generation MagneRide control technology. A twin-wire dual coil actuator has been added to the system to provide faster response and a greater range of damping control, which will deliver high levels of traction, stability and comfort whilst on and off the road.

    "With around half a million units already produced, MagneRide technology is robust and well-proven on high-performance cars, supercars and large SUVs," says BWI's manager, forward engineering controlled suspensions, Olivier Raynauld. "The third generation of MagneRide, with faster response and wider dynamic range, effectively removes the need for chassis engineers to compromise between comfort and handling - whether driving over rocky tracks or smooth highways. We are proud of its contribution to the Range Rover Evoque's outstanding driving experience."

    MagneRide uses a Megneto Rheological (MR) damper fluid. It contains small metallic particles which can be quickly and temporarily magnetised by energising electrical coils in the damper piston. When the current is switched off, the particles get dispersed randomly and the damper is in its softest setting. By applying a current, the particles become magnetised which, depending on the strength of the magnetic field, attract each other which increases the resistance of flow and as a result stiffens the dampening. The damping force can be varied almost instantaneously and over a wide range, by varying the current applied.

    The third generation sees two smaller coils replace the damper's previous single electrical coil, with a bespoke ECU with optimised control algorithms. These changes result in quicker "off current" performance, which gives the system faster response and therefore isolate the vehicle occupants from the terrain.

    The dual coils also extend the dampers' dynamic range, even at low body velocities associated with typical off-road driving which, with conventional dampening technologies, are difficult to control. As well as having a direct influence on comfort and handling, this also allows the influence of the roll bars and springs to be reduced which further improve ride handling.

    MagneRide has no small moving parts and features fewers parts overall than a traditional passive damper. There is no off-road button to push and the response is proportional, apposed to conventional active suspension systems, which are stepped.

    "Land Rover wanted a new level of suspension control for the Evoque," explains Raynauld. "Adaptive Dynamics, using BWI's MagneRide dampers provides that control across all road surfaces and under all conditions."
