The 9-speed transmission does NOT use 1st gear, unless...

I just confirmed. The transmission will never use 1st gear on it's own. Even in Sport mode this is true. The only way to engage 1st gear is to switch to Sport mode and manually paddle shift into 1st gear.

Be prepared to have your mind blown on launch acceleration. 1st gear is super low, you'll redline by 20 mph. The Evoque launches HARD now.

I imagine it'll use first gear for Mud and Ruts mode.

... plus a gear for more kick-ass off-roading and towing. It is a Land Rover after all. (Kick-ass is a relative term here, it's still no Defender.)

Upshifts so slowly that launch improvement gets chewed up due to initial gear change needed. That's why they don't use first even with a full throttle launch. I've confirmed it on many attempts. No accel gain due to slow upshift.

What a bummer. I don't understand why LR neuters these evoques.
