Does changing only 1 tyre damage gearbox?
I've got a screw in the sidewall of my rear tyre, and I'm being told by the garage that I have to replace both rear tyres as a difference in tread depth of over 3mm will damage the gearbox in a short space of time on a 4x4. (He said by winding up the diff??)
I have no idea whether or not this is true. Any ideas?
I only really wanted to change one as the other tyre has 4.5mm tread left on it.

Yes I believe you need to keep all the tires The same even the front to the back this is an all-wheel-drive vehicle so it would not be good to have wheels turning at different speeds so the short answer is yes it is true you need to change all four tires not just the rear but the front as well to be safe
In theory you could get one new tire and have it shaved down to match the tread depth of the others, if you can find a place that does this.
