I posted this topic a couple years ago. I'm wondering if anyone using a window mounted radar detector in their Evoque has new feedback on this issue. (Rovingvic you mentioned you have a detector in your Evoque.) I was surprised and disappointed when shortly after purchasing my 2013 Evoque that my favorite multi-directional Valentine radar unit didn't work in my Evoque because of the cars glass anti sun radiant coating which blocks out the radar signal from the radar unit. I tried using the small radiant free area in the rear view mirror area but the Valentines performance was so poor that it was useless. I then purchased an Escort Redline unit that doesn't have the 360 degree feature and is a straight ahead sensing operation, thinking this will work through the small radiant free opening when placed behind it. Better than the Valentine but still not working well enough to trust it (about a 50% drop in sensitivity – in comparison to using it in my other car with no radiant coating on the windows.) Anyone discover a radar detector that works well or have a method to get around this limitation? Please no lectures on observing the speed limit.

I have the Passport 9500ix. I have the heated wind shield, which doesn't want to allow the speed display to work. I have mine mounted dead center of the windshield and high enough to be able to get a shot through the back window.

If I were to use that location with either my Valentine or Escort Redline detectors they would be useless. Are you sure your passport detector's performance isn't affected? I believe the same coating is on all the windows.

My radar detector saves me on a regular basis, alerting me way before I ever see the cop with radar using K or Ka bands. With Laser I can only hope the cop points it at someone else before he points at me. The last ticket I received was laser and my detector told me so. Cop was in a black Taurus on a side street. HPD doesn't drive all black vehicles & they don't drive the Ford Taurus!

The only part that has difficulty is the GPS based speedometer built in the detector. It doesn't want to lock in for some reason and I have tried different locations as suggested on another forum. I believe it's due to the heating elements in the windshield.

Ric, you seem to be the anomaly here.. My radar detector is useless in Evoque and EZPass doesn't work either,. You must have the "SPECIAL" windshield. ;)

I think I see the issue. You have a 2012 Pure Plus. Both your vehicle and mine have the solar attenuating glass but... the Pure Plus does not have the heated windshield! I think its the heated windshield that causes the issues. No way a transponder would operate on my windshield where yours is located.

This is a picture of my windshield in the fog. I do have the heated windshield.

Did you get that as an add on option because it is not part of the pure plus package, at least from what I read on the 2015's and they rarely delete an option. I thought though lines were for the solar attentuating glass.

I believe it's called the cold climate package. It has heated seats, steering wheel, windshield, washer fluid and outside mirrors I think. Living in southeast Texas I rarely need the cold climate package although I have used the heated seats and steering wheel a few times on the rare below freezing days. All of the correct switches for the windshield, steering wheel and seats are in place. A panoramic glass roof was the only other option.

So your Valentine didn't work in the special area next to the rear view mirror? I haven't tried my Valentine yet, sitting in my other car. But would be good to know how bad it is in the Evoque. There are remote detectors to install in the front / rear bumpers.....

K. Well I'll try one more time before I succomb to the external unit or the EZPass

Radar detectors are becoming increasingly obsolete anyway as close range triggering is now the norm. I have had multiple times where I'd get a 1 second burst only to see a cop pull out and nail someone else that just went by me.. Keep it at 9.9 mph over and you're OK. They go after the 10+ violators in most states these days. Lesser stuff actually costs more in court than the fine.

How I Tested my Radar Detectors

Both my detectors Valentine and the forward detecting Escort Redline have decreased performance in my 2013 Evoque (solar coated windows, no heated windscreen.) The detectors were behind the clear non-coated area near the rear view mirror. I tested this by driving a route with stationary radar triggering spots along it. The best of these test spots was a stationary speed warning machine. I drove the route with my Evoque and then again with my Ford F-150 with good radar response non restricting windows. The Escort was reduced about to about 75% of its performance and the Valentine was reduced to less than 50% of its performance with complete loss of directional information. Because of this I think the solar coating is on all the Evoque's windows. I thought of a remote indicator behind the front grille but I was discouraged by the amount of work to install it. Some State Police here may have the latest technology but most still use the easier to detect types of older radar. The local police still use the old style easy to detect radar guns.

The lines in his picture are for the heated windshield and my pure plus has them with the heated steering wheel as part of the climate package

It was refreshing to take a 2600 mles trip with no detector for a change. If they want you, they WILL get you, 2 rules I follow, +20 is where the big tickets start and just avoid dodging about in traffic as that REALLY pisses off the cops. Oh did I mention don't be an A$$hole with you cell phone while driving...?
