How many of you Evoque owners use a radar detector on your commutes and trips? After buying my 2013 Evoque I sadly discovered my Valentine radar detector was basically useless in the Evoque due to the type of polarized(?) window glass. The polarization works great at filtering sunlight but obstructs all incoming signals. The Valentine detector has front and rear directed sensors with the result that the rear became non functional in the Evoque and the front was greatly reduced in sensitivity when required to work through the small clear area beside the rearview mirror. In my drives the interstates and expressways are usually driven +20mph over the speed limits and anyone slower is a traffic hazard. Police radar is used extensively and the state has legendary speed traps that locals use for revenue. Also we have the highest insurance rates in the country and one or two tickets puts your in the very expensive if not unaffordable state insurance system (= more state revenue.) As much as I love my Evoque, had I know this limitation I wouldn't have purchased it. Perhaps if the front window needs to be replaced at anytime I may look into a non polarized version if available.

Many cars today come with thermal windshields, making on-dash radar detectors useless. The only fix is to either replace the glass or have a system installed that uses externally mounted antennas.

I use a radar detector in my MY2013 Evoque. I have an Escort Solo 2, battery operated, so no cords! It works fine in the Evoque. Having said that, I do NOT have the heated windscreen.

My Passport radar detector works fine in the Evoque with the heated windshield. However, the GPS portion of the detector will not lock in on a signal. It just keeps searching. I have tried moving it around to different sections of the windshield, but there isn't a position that will allow the GPS to lock on to a signal. The radar detector still gives me plenty of warning.

I find this interesting. I have never had a radar detector, never needed one, will never own one either. I always thought that radar detectors were illegal in many states. I generally keep the speed no more than 5-10 MPH over the limit. I am rarely ever in a hurry, the time in the car is my only alone time. I keep it no more than 10-15 over the speed limit on the interstate. 20 over constitutes reckless driving in most states. Every once in a while I will open it up and break 100 for shits and grins, on ramps, straight aways, etc., but that is rare, especially in the Evoque. It is just not that exciting. In my 2011 Camaro, it was a daily event. It would hit 105 in 3rd gear, and there were 3 gears left. Awesome car! I have only had 2 speeding tickets in my 28 years of driving (I say this knocking on my head as there is no wood close by). Happy driving, and be careful out there, and enjoy that ride.

Rsquared and Rovingvic,

Are you using the clear non thermal area of your windshield by the rear view mirror to point the antenna through? After giving up on my Valentine radar detector I purchased an Escort Redline detector, only forward sensitive but having a long range. Then I did a comparison of detection sensitivity having it mounted in my Evouqe and then mounting it at the same window height in my F150 Ford pickup which has no thermal type front window. I ran it through a stationary radar site that warns you of your speeding giving you a speed readout. Through the thermal window the Evoque was 10-20% of the range warning compared to the Ford. Through the small clear portion of the Evoque's window the range was about 75% of the range compared to the Ford.

I did try the clear area. Radar and laser detection is not an issue at all! I have the Passport 9500, which as with most passports, can show your speed and remember false locations, etc. These features use the GPS system for info and that is the part that won't lock in. The satellite symbol just keeps spinning...

Mstraka,

I do NOT use the small clear area on the windscreen. I mount the detector directly behind, or in front off (whichever you prefer), the rear view mirror.

Also, I do not use my radar detector so I can speed. I just like to know where radar is being run, so I can make sure I'm not over the speed limit due to just tooling along and maybe just going a little too fast.

I meant no disrespect to anyone who uses a radar detector. I have not experienced the problems with the device as I do not use one, but found it interesting that the design of the car, specifically the windshield, reduces the functionality. I would suspect that this problem is vary similar to the problem with the EZ pass others were having. There were several threads on that topic. I am not sure what the solution was though, again, I do not use an EZ pass and do not have that problem either.

I too have the Escort 9500 but for the life of me can't figure out how the heck to mount it so that it sits happily in the clear part of the windshield.

Any pics to help an idiot are much appreciated!!

It took some invention to come up with a way to position the Escort Redline securely to operate through the clear area. I'll post some pics in the next couple days that I hope may help you.

Radar and laser detectore are nothing but a ticket notifiers. If you want anything effective, you need to get a laser jammer which is illegall in all states. Other tan that try to use the Waze app which warns you of the cops on the road ahead. Best lase jammer is Anti Lase Priority....Look it up if you got the guts to get it....the only thing that works......
