Hi. I just noticed a distinct smell whenever I turn on the AC, I'm pretty sure its mildew build up. Has anyone here experienced this? Will a new cabin filter do the trick? Thank you in advance.
Yes that should do it. I noticed the same thing and it cleared up in less then a hour of running. If not check the carpets they may need to be cleaned as well
There are also several air con deodoriser/cleaners that you can buy, such as STP, Autoglym & Holts. These can kill any bacteria build up eliminating odours. Do a quick google search for Car Aircon Cleaners & it will throw up quite a few.
Also, if it smells bad (not mildew) then it might be leaking refrigerant. However, this would happen in tandem with some hissing type noise when the compressor is running.
The maintenance guy at my Land Rover dealer (not that I ever trust what they say), has told me that old cabin filters DO begin to smell after a while. I just pay the money and have them replace it every year- because it's kinda' a pain to do it yourself. I did it once.
