Hello I am Performing a timing chain kit job (vvt intake lock pin broke) on my 2012 Range Rover Evoque and have a few questions. I ordered a kit and noticed it only came with one friction washer or is it called a diamond washer. The crank gear when I removed it has two of them and both VVT gears have one on the inside so a total of four
Can the old ones be reused? They look like a standard thin friction washer do they actually have diamonds in them? Also Can you reuse the crank bolt or do you need to purchase a new one when reassembling?

Furthermore when replacing the VVT gears it was difficult to note exact position of each gear especially on the intake side because it was broken and was able to move because spring inside was broken. I still can’t wrap my head around the Vvt gears and the crank not having any key way to locate positioning. What keeps them from slipping position on cam or crank shaft? The tension of the bolt is all that holds it in correct position.
Thanks in advance!

Always Look in Rover workshop manual, to see if they call for NOT reusing some bolts, nuts, washers, etc. Workshop manual is online, for FREE down loading. The diamond washers on the VVTs need to be new, because reusing old ones MAY cause the bolt they are on to back out to some degree, so you get VVTs not tight, loose, so not functioning.

The fact that diamond washers are used, along with proper torque, in tightening up the bolts, PREVENT bolts backing off, loosening. That is why it is important to NOT reuse those washers, use only new ones.
